Our Team
Cathy Egan is a world renowned retinal expert at Moorfields Eye Hospital, associate professor at the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL and the clinical lead for the diabetic retinopathy service at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She has published extensively on disorders of the retina and retinal blood supply, from the most common blinding disorders, like diabetic retinopathy, to rare diseases like MacTel. Her pioneering work on the MacTel study has engendered new insight into this condition and paved the way for new treatments.
She has particular interest in preventing blindness due to the complications of diabetes and her group set the standard for validation of AI approaches to diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. This work has led to the first steps towards implementation of AI into the NHS diabetic eye screening programme this year with further studies planned to examine the effect of different levels of retinal pigmentation (which varies between people) on performance of AI algorithms.
